C 10.20 (Marmetola)
Carrara is famous for its marble. Natural stone developed 30 million years ago when the European and African continental plates pushed together and formed the Apuan Alps. Extremely high temperatures and enormous pressure transformed calcite deposits into a homogeneous mass.
The photograph of the quarry was made during my visit to Colonnata.
For me, the fog and the blurring of the photographs symbolize the transfiguration that exists in connection with Carrara marble. The romantic image of Michelangelo, who chooses his Statuario Bianco for his sculptures, stands in contrast to the more and more rabid and profit-oriented mining methods of the raw material by the quarry owners.
